Today marks the three-year anniversary since the very first episode was posted in the #StoryCorps Archive for #TalesFromTheDeep! The first conversation was between myself and Maya Pincus - she was in hotel quarantine in Cape Town, waiting to board JOIDES Resolution as an outreach officer. 🌊⚒️🧪

A little late for #WorldOctopusDay, but this mini quilt is too cute not to share! The fabric was designed by Alaskan artist Evon Zerbetz for the Sea Life Collection (manufactured by Clothworks, sold in Alaskan fabric shops). I purchased the fabric on Kodiak Island before sailing with NOAA #QuiltSky

June is #NationalOceanMonth. Each year, since 2006, there has been a Presidential Proclamation for National Oceans Week/Oceans/Ocean Month! (at least, through 2024 - nothing yet for 2025...). 🌊 Photo taken from NOAA fisheries ship in the Gulf of Alaska. Blog post at: geoedtrek.org/2019/06/10/p...

And my data visualization from yesterday's Philadelphia Phillies (red yarn) and Pittsburgh Pirates (gold yarn) game is complete! Titled Batter Up!, this represents the number of batters per team per inning. #CrochetSky ⚾ 🧶 Full explanation is in this blog post: journeysofdrg.org/2025/05/19/d...

My first attempt at creating a data visualization live during a baseball game! Let’s see what the Phillies and Pirates bring to the plate for me to crochet…. #CrochetSky

I had set up headshots of Star Wars characters across the movies/series for people to mark their vote. The winner from this international group of scientists and crew members was... Chewbacca!
May 4, 2025 at 4:21 PM
Fun fact - I was out to sea on JOIDES Resolution during Star Wars Day in 2022. I brought this quilt on board with me and it was hanging in the Galley, along with a survey for everyone on board to vote for their favorite Star Wars character.

In this cherry blossom season, I was disappointed (although expected) to hear "Stumpy" has been removed. I had a chance to visit the tree that just wouldn't give up, standing on the Tidal Basin edge. Looking forward to visiting Stumpy's offspring in the future!

I’m so glad #NSTA25 had the poster option to present - I do wish the session was longer than 1 hour! Still, it was great to get some teacher feedback on our OER about scientific ocean drilling 🌊

It's #NationalQuiltingDay! I took the time to create a quilt I've titled Red Sky Morning, SciOD Warning. This crying eyeball into a turbulent sea represents the loss the ocean community is feeling without JOIDES Resolution. #quiltsky 🧪🌊⚒️
