Ein Gespräch mit GEO über die Psychologie von Umweltverbrechen

An interview I did with GEO about the psychological science that can help us understand environmental crimes... and why I think it makes more interesting true crime than murder cases. 🧪

"Julia Shaw brilliantly sets the pace for criminal acts that the world needs to know about.

I found Green Crime deeply compelling. A true crime thriller that, for once, has global consequences”

Remember when the press called sugar and ultra processed foods "addictive", comparing them to drugs? And many of us - me included - laughed and said that language was too extreme?

Well, shucks. I wonder what else we will learn about self-control and, say, crime? 🧪

This is the funniest science writeup I've seen in a long time. It's about why cats are so perfectly evolved 🧪

Apparently lots of other animals have "tried to be cats" and the fact that other species have so much more variation is "because they suck" 😆

If you like true crime, research, and top notch journalism, you'll love the brand new series "beyond suspicion" on audible. It examines how the worst offenders are often hiding in plain sight.

I'm interviewed in two of the chapters/episodes and Yinka Bokinni is such a great presenter!

Excited to announce that my next book will be released in the UK in October 2025! It's got crime, exciting investigations, and science 🧪🕵️‍♂️ I also got some new author shots

The scientific misinformation about heat pumps is fascinating 🧪

It's a mix of deliberately sowed energy-transition confusion/resistance, combined with people simply not believing science they don't understand

But it's time to upgrade both for the planet and energy independence

What does "queer" mean? A little except from my recent piece in Metro. #queer

Fiction about climate change is called cli-fi, and it's a form of "narrative persuasion"

But a 2024 study found that cli-fi stories were not always more compelling

Participants only given climate facts supported climate policies more, while those watching cli-fi donated more 🧪 #PsychSciSky

Do you accurately remember your own home?

I was recently on an episode of BBC Crowd Science interviewed about whether it could be that someone has a false memory of how sun used to stream in through their windows. 🌞

Answered a few questions on AI & criminal psychology recently!

Some of you should check out "predictive policing"

It's somewhat controversial, but probably still less biased than humans making policing resource decisions

And... It's obviously the path all policing is going to take v soon 👀

Last time Trump was elected I wrote a book on the science of why we dehumanise people, trying to break down the concept of evil.

Unfortunately it's become more relevant again today.

Trying to figure out whether "perp walks" will actually deter environmental crime & came across this thought-provoking article.

It also has this great sentence about the VW emissions scandal, Diesel gate; "The wheels of German justice turn slower than the wheels of German cars"
