Australian Insect Fanatic (and BritSF fan and Furry)
It grows in well-drained red soil derived from laterite, in Eucalyptus woodland.
December 11, 2025 at 8:28 AM
Not many Australian plants are deciduous, but this one is bare of leaves from June to September.
December 11, 2025 at 8:27 AM
It can grow to about 9m in height, but on the islands, or the coast as here, it’s usually wind-pruned to a much shorter maximum height.

Here’s another one from Karnup.

The species is apparently endemic to Australia, but records are so scarce for the two species in the genus that that may not be accurate. Nothing is known about the larvae.

drhoz.tumblr.com/post/8018508... #3376 - Petrorhagia dubia - Hairypink

An annual herb sometimes as much as 90cm tall, but usually much less. It originated in southern Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, but is now widespread and sometimes weedy.
December 4, 2025 at 11:44 AM
It grows to about a meter and half tall, and dies off at the end of the season. It was introduced to Australia as a hardy, nitrogen-fixing forage crop, despite being somewhat poisonous, and rapidly became a problem.

Perth, many locations.

drhoz.tumblr.com/post/8016627... #3372 - Trifolium campestre - Hop Trefoil AKA field clover and low hop clover.

Native to Europe and western Asia, where it grows in dry, open habitat, and often in sandy soils. A good forage plant, but not cultivated, usually.

Bertram, Perth.

The seeds are formed with a fatty growth on one end, so they will be collected by ants, dragged to their nests, and dumped in the fertile soil of the ant’s garbage heap after they’re eaten the bait.

Perth, various locations. such as this garage.

Quite variable in size and colour, sometimes reaching 12m in height, and sometimes reddish-purple or bronze in colour. Some of that variation is due to selective breeding. Some cultivars are grown as ornamentals, but others are used for oil production.

drhoz.tumblr.com/post/8015024... - Moraea flaccida - One-leaf Cape Tulip

AKA various species of Homeria.

Another pretty plant from the extreme SW of Africa, that’s become a highly invasive weed in Southern Australia and Norfolk Island.

Under optimal conditions, a duckweed farm can produce 10 to 30 tons of dried duckweed per hectare per year. They’ve also been genetically engineered to produce pharmaceuticals.

Tomato Lake, Belmont, Perth. Believe me, the duckweed isn’t NEARLY as big a problem as the Salvinia was.
December 1, 2025 at 11:09 AM
They can rapidly multiple to fill still waterways, but they are also useful in bioremidiation of polluted waterways, and dried duckweed meal is a good quality cattle feed.

In Tomato Lake, a suburban wetland that was once extremely degraded, and Salvinia-infested, until it was restored by volunteers from the WA Naturalists Club in the 1970s.

drhoz.tumblr.com/post/8011329... #3363 - Nylanderia sp.

A nearly cosmopolitan genus of ant, with well over 100 species, and two known from fossils. Some are invasive.
December 1, 2025 at 10:40 AM
B. lutea is easily the most abundant species throughout Australia. Often found cohabiting with termites under stones or rotting logs, and preying on the latter. Also common in suburban areas, where they not infrequently sting people.

Lake Mealup, S.of Perth, North Dandalup, and elsewhere.

‘Yellow short wrinkled ant’.

A de-alate queen looking for a good spot to start a nest after her nuptial flight. This species has unusually large queens for Ponerine standards, and they are immediately recognisable by their size.

drhoz.tumblr.com/post/8010982... #3361 - Diplotaxis sp. - Wall-Rocket

A genus of cruciferous plants, originating in the Old World and most diverse around the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. A few species have been used as leaf vegetables, for the peppery taste.

Madora Bay, Perth.

Small blowflies endemic to southern Australia and Tasmania.

Thornlie, Perth.

It can reach 2m in height but most of that is the leaves, since it doesn’t have a visible trunk, unlike the better-known species of grasstree. Like the other grasstrees, the flowerspike is a very rich source of nectar and pollen.
