Tried my hand at foraging today. Lovely ripe elderberries from the local park. Added fresh ginger, cinnamon and honey. Made just under 500ml. Yummy. 🌱

Super excited for the tomato harvest that’s just starting. We’ve got Lizzano cherry toms in hanging baskets and gardeners delight, crimson crush and marmande in the polytunnel 🍅 🌱

Yesterday was my last day at the University of Liverpool after 20 incredible years. We’ve still got some papers to finish so watch this space for updates. Now, to the allotment!

Thrilled to receive the ‘Mentor’ award at @livuni-ilcams.bsky.social away day. Supporting the next generation of scientists has always been incredibly important to me, and it’s lovely to be nominated so THANK YOU if you were one of the people who put me forward for this award.

The allotment is bountiful this year. Lunch today was courgette and kale soup. Absolutely delicious. 🌱

Was called a “c*nt in a mask” this morning at my local Sainsbury’s 😷 Have a lovely day mate and good luck with your “summer flu” (BTW it’s not flu) 🦠

First courgette of the year, so had to make this absolute banger of a salad - courgette, rocket, feta, pine nuts, garlic and lemon juice 😘 👌🏼

Nature is beautiful. This gorgeous poppy is growing in a tiny patch of soil in a messy corner of the allotment, on top of old bits of plastic and stones. Self seeded. Absolutely stunning. 🌺🌱

About 15 years ago we were in Liverpool centre & Robinsons fruit juice were giving away black currant bushes. Can’t remember why. Anyway, we’ve lovingly cared for “Ben” since and today we had our first harvest! 🫐

Picked 3.8 kilos of gooseberries from the allotment this morning! Worth all the scratches. 🌱

It was our absolute pleasure to speak at Sefton Older Persons Forum in Southport today about research into ageing at the University of Liverpool. @gnna.bsky.social absolutely enthralled them with her PhD research into neutrophils and frailty #immunosky 🧪 @livuni-ilcams.bsky.social

Asked my technical team for a polystyrene box and they did not disappoint- they led me to the palace of polystyrene boxes! 🧪

Particularly sad to say goodbye to Izzy 😢 She did her Hons project with me last year as well as a summer internship in Bangkok with me and a Thai collaborator. She’s worked very hard in the lab this year but sadly I wasn’t able to secure PhD funding for her 😢

We’ve had a lot of holes appearing in our garden overnight. Clearly made by an animal. Has anybody got any ideas what might have made them? We are in an urban environment close to a public park in NW England 🌱

Excellent talk by @gnna.bsky.social on her PhD work in #neutrophils at the UK neutrophil network meeting in Newcastle

5 years since I sent my lab home for Covid lockdowns, we expected to be out of the lab for 3 months, in reality it was 12 months. The world has moved on but I haven’t. Covid is still a serious threat to our immune system & long term health. Did I lecture for 2h today in a mask 😷? You bet! #ImmunoSky
