We trained a separate machine learning algorithm to create a synthetic training set, covering this pre-2015 period so that we can create our full 2011-2022 maps. Our synthetic PM2.5 compares very well to a small network of observations in Seoul, which we don't use in training.

To give you a sense of what this dataset adds, here is a map of Seoul during an extreme pollution event in May 2016. Many areas outside the city center have no nearby observations, but this tool can help fill the gaps.

PM2.5 is the number one environmental cause of death. Fortunately, governments in east Asia have cracked down on emissions, leading to enormous improvements in air quality everywhere, with no population left behind.

New open-access paper at Atmos. Environment! We used machine learning to transform data from the GOCI satellite -- originally launched to study ocean color -- into daily maps of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at 2km resolution, 2011-2022. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Bike frozen in fifth gear after the northeast cold snap. Feels like I'm commuting in super smash bros and got hit by the ice climbers.
