It was Julian Armstrong, a fine Québécoise cook and writer with the Montreal Gazette, who introduced me to the many variations of tourtière, in her brilliant cookbook, Made in Quebec. My father’s copy was ablaze with neon tabs.

This is the third year I've been a judge for the Irish Food Writing Awards. It is always an honour. I have admiration for the depth of talent and Sue Campbell is a masterful organizer. Congratulations to Alex O'Neill.

My friend Ghaithaa always sends me home with a package of ground lamb which is a real treat for me. Today I turned it into a ragu with fennel seed and it is divine.
