You can't spell weight painting without pain!
A few things I keep in mind
1) Keep your end use in mind, how much of an extreme you will need to push/pull the rig
2) Make use of surrounding bones to take pressure off the main bone, also consider correction/twist bones that can be used to help

An interesting concept for business books on the go as audiobooks, but I also see the trouble as you mention! I prefer listening to novels myself, lately been listening to Redwall.
