I don't get why they don't recognise this tendency as a cause of their failures; it's really not that complicated!

They have a tendency across all of their policy and positioning to give with one hand and take with the other; this is literally true for HE with the decision to link fees to inflation but then also hit international students. So on both messaging and substance, any positive effect is cancelled out.

Personally my guess is that it’s now too late, at least under this PM, but if they wanted to make a serious attempt then this is the behaviour they’ve got to change.

Aside from the substantive problems with this, it feels very culturally outdated: Owning 'a Mercedes' might have implied one thing in the 90s, but an A-Class has been an extremely normal car for working-class people to own for a couple of decades now.

Possible that parts of the Left might be uncomfortable with this because it sounds pro-consumerism, but it's a genuinely important aspect of everyday human dignity to be able to spend your own funds as you see fit within the law; accepting a benefit from the state should not compromise that right.

I'm sure many magistrates are trying to do their best in an overloaded system. But when the stakes are this high, if you can't do the job properly then the honourable and ethical thing to do is resign, and let the system break down completely rather than be complicit in malpractice and injustice.
