That’s a pity. I think it was Meloni et al who required fluency in Italian for spouses of Italian citizens, which is the same as Switzerland where, in order to naturalise, you need fluency in one of the national languages.

You can get Italian citizenship via great grandparents and even great great grandparents as long as they did not renounce Italian citizenship. You would not need to speak Italian but your spouse (if you have one) would if they sought citizenship after you got yours.
