Does an #18thc messianic cult in Eastern Europe/ the Levant count as a subculture?
If so, my choice has to be Olga Tokarczuk's _The Books of Jacob_.

This was my first Scott! Time definitely tended to hang heavily on my hands during my suburban adolescence but I adored it: I can still recall how bereft and shocked I felt when I got to the end.
It has taught well for me in graduate seminars.

Calling @whitneytrettien.bsky.social , whose recent book, Cut,Copy,Paste corrects the record on Bagford, who is in many ways the first of the book historians. There’s a lot of class animus in the received account. Read her fabulous chapter for an alternative.

You'll put the chapter that you contributed on your annual report, knowing that nobody is left to read your essay and yet confident, still, that there remains a dean's office full of bean counters who will either file that report away or dun you if it's late.

It's sublime! Did you know that Hass also adapted, in 1986, James Hogg's Private memoirs and confessions of a justified sinner? (There was a sold-out retrospective of his films here about 8 or 9 years ago: we felt very lucky!)
