Thank you @francesryan.bsky.social for writing such an important book. Honoured to be mentioned in it. You asked what advice I have for anyone struggling with being different due to disability: finding and connecting with disabled and chronically ill communities has been so important for me. 💙

This paper by @nisreenalwan.bsky.social and colleagues outlines the work required to live with long-term conditions. There are strong parallels with our ‘pathway to inequality’ which shows the impact of trying to manage when chronic illness is disbelieved. Read more here: tinyurl.com/3rd3hjxy
Pathway to inequality: a circular pathway. In the centre it says stigma, lack of trust and agency and no patient say in decision making. Around the outer pathway it says: 1. Disbelief and discrimination from medical professionals 1a. If you can afford it, move to private care 2. Unable to get adjustments in work or education 3. Unable to access benefits 4. Unable to access health and social care 5. Disbelief and isolation from family and friends 6. Negative impact on self-esteem and mental health 7. Having to fight for access to services 8. Worsening of symptoms 9. Avoidance of medical care 10. Start again with fewer resources and worse health
