We use hashes in our own VRF design in order to provide deterministic derivation paths from our verifiable random beacons to actual random numbers, and you can use the hash function you want for it, as long as its digests are uniformly distributed among all possible byte strings.

Is the prediction made in 2020 that a SHA-1 chosen-prefix attack would be costing less than $10,000 by 2025 actually true?
What if we could repurpose the bitcoin network to compute SHA-1 hashes?
How about supercomputers?
