@dphuber.bsky.social
Soils, agriculture, & ecosystems. I study dryland carbon & nutrient cycling, hydrology, fire ecology, & invasive species. Birthdate = -7.36‰. Views my own.
Spent the week at the USFS Starkey Experimental Forest in north-central Oregon (near La Grande).

Extensive old basalt flows capped by ~7500 year old ash deposits that drastically changed the distribution of vegetation, making for interesting hydrology today.

One of the benefits of doing a lot of 3D printing for work is knowing how to accessorize your pumpkin for #Halloween

Summer rains (and snow) on severely burned hill slopes. We’ve seen several slumps and debris flows throughout the Boise NF this spring/summer.

Seismic transects in Dry Creek Experimental Watershed. Teaching a summer field course on soils and geophysics with fellow @boisestate.bsky.social faculty Qifei Niu. Students are killing it!

My USDA soil health and rural development program was frozen and then terminated this semester.

My amazing colleagues at Boise State stepped up to temporarily support me and my staff. I’m working on 4 short-term projects until I find something permanent. Scattered but some great summer fieldwork 🏔️

Post #fire debris flow impacts on river water quality and downstream food webs. Spring melt and new debris flows starting. Anyone interested in doing some complementary #eDNA sampling? This is a Blue Ribbon fishing area in case that’s incentive 😅

I’ve got to say, I’m pretty pissed off. I shouldn’t be packing boxes. I shouldn’t be leaving academia and now unemployed. Adding salt to the wound, my daughter starts college this year and will lose her faculty dependent tuition waiver. So much planning and hard work gone.

Imaging wildfire-induced carbonates (CaCO3) to determine formation process. Are they from plant calcium oxalates? What is the fate of this mineral ash in Drylands? Is it important to carbon cycling? Paleothermometry? Terrestrial weathering rates?

It’s not official but it looks like my funding related to soil health & rural development won’t be continued.

I’m asking if any colleagues out there have work, know someone with work, know a company I should talk to about work, etc.

Hoping for mid-April but the summer field season would be fine.

Post-burn water quality sampling. I did fall in. Lots of rotten anchor ice with the warm temps. Yes, the water was very cold 🥶😑

Otherwise, ~10 miles of cross country skiing warms you up.

Note the black carbon embedded in the ice #Idaho

Post-fire water quality sampling during the winter. That water was 0.3C in some streams. South Fork of the Payette was beautiful.

#Canadian friends, don’t unfollow me for this, but attended my first hockey game this week. Haven’t attended a more exciting sporting event in a long time!

Few things as frustrating (for everyone involved) than hitting a busy work schedule while in the middle of home renovations.

Had my first work-free weekend in months and now ready to install the floating floor in the ex-garage.
