Sorry to reply to old message but yeah it was formic acid throughout the book & never folate. Somebody was doing "something disgusting out under the bleachers ..." i.e. eating ants for the reasons explained later in the novel. Unabridged audiobook version narrated by Peter Berkrot is really good!
