But when doing community policing in “dangerous” areas (affected by insurgency and criminal violence), officers may update negatively about threats to their own safety, even when the citizen interactions during the meetings are positive.

First, we think officers who are already “embedded” in the communities they serve are less likely to update their views of citizens based on contact made through community policing. In our case, attitudes improved only among officers from outside the province.

Participating in community policing caused officers to have a better understanding of citizen concerns, but it didn’t move the needle when it came to officer trust, empathy, or accountability.

So honored to win APSA SE Asia Group's paper award for our new WP!

A polisky 🧵 on the paper 👇
1. OFFICER attitudes are key to policing outcomes
2. Contact w/ citizens improved attitudes in safe areas, BACKFIRED in “dangerous” areas
3. Field experiments are great for building INDUCTIVE theory
