That's literally how penicillin was discovered. I have my own thought experiment: Could an LLM have discovered penicillin using the current understanding of microbiology in 1928?

These ppl don't understand anything. To them everything is just some thought exercise that can be solved by just being smart enough.
So much of science is, "So this is weird. I wonder why X does that?"
LLMs will never have intellectual curiosity bc you can't create that using a statistical model.
