boycotting for siding with fascism: amazon, wapo, tesla, twitter, cbs, meta
German historian Fernando Esposito discusses fascism in terms of both movement and regime, not just totalitarian states. He highlights that fascist movements use mass mobilization, mythic narratives, elite-movement alliances, and violence even before seizing full state power.

In his definition:

fascism is “a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline … by … a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants … [who] abandon democratic liberties … and pursue … goals of internal cleansing … and external expansion.”

In “The Five Stages of Fascism”, Robert Paxton (American political scientist and historian specializing in Vichy France, fascism, and Europe during the World War II era) explicitly models fascism as a process with a movement stage, before any regime takes power.

i'm hoping for less drama, man. i'm so sick of needing to think about this shit because other people are unable to recognize plain truths like that this guy spread a plague deliberately as part of a coup attempt. how's that for drama. i can't use scary words?

i'm not hoping for it.

fascism is a phenomenon of people working to consolidate and seize power, using things like racism, scapegoating and deceit to manipulate supporters into helping. it starts before unchecked power is established. it's a methodology. it's not a synonym for dictatorship.

unfortunately making that excuse for him is not accurate.

he worsened the impact on the economy and also lost the election by his nightmarish handling of covid.

he prefered to contest the election than to win it

the modern info situation is fucked and the sooner people fully accept that the sooner we adapt

various actors now tacitly collaborate by reinforcing subversive narratives. the vast number of info sources means fewer shared facts. new ways to manipulate people are actively being exploited and we're only just starting to adapt to them.

the effects on people's minds are extensive and harmful.

propagating info is something the internet ultimately deprived us of. we don't have a way to propagate info to all pockets of consumers. media entities behave in more brazen ways. bad actors can no longer bury things, now they must drown them out and phase them out with countermessaging.

the species has awakened in a new environment and people don't fully realize it yet. the problem is profoundly deeper than any single piece, fox is a large symptom of the problem. we can use it to ridicule because it's ridiculous. but we fix the problem by adapting to the new world.

I would be interested to learn more about how activists can apply themselves to the urgent problem of Fox News. Short of calling up our red family members, and talking to them about stuff, which no one wants to do, which is why we're in this situation, what can people do?

it's like he's ignoring the legit use of the term as a decriptor of the administration because some posts he saw were fatalist about the situation

fascism does not require dictatorial control. the term can describe methods and movements

he's narrowing his critique at least and starting to qualify
