Scary scene - glad neither the kid nor the dad was hurt.

There’s a magnet school on a 4-lane 1-way road in my area. I’ve been on it at pickup time when the school lights are flashing and found I’m almost the only one to slow down. TBH, I don’t often see anyone on the sidewalks there, but still …

“Gallup Poll | US Adults | Thursday”

Not to defend Fox News, but questions should go also to Gallup.

Under what circumstances would 15 year olds be considered adults? What was the polling question?

The word “serfdom” came to mind when I first heard of it.

Money loses its meaning in such extreme aggregation. It becomes what? Power?

At such levels, it seems increasingly detached from notions of value of labor, goods & property.

In hyper large quantities, in the context of valuation, its behavior is almost surreal (vast swings in huge numbers)

#Millets are found across 12 genera in 5 botanical tribes in two subfamilies of the Poaceae family.

The Millets Triangle was developed as a way of visualizing this botanical diversity, accounting also for continental origins and relative production levels.

Co-founding and working with the North American Millets Alliance @namericamillets.bsky.social , we came to understand "millet(s)" as kind of a "folk taxonomy," as it covers a range of different species in Poaceae from various parts of Asia & Africa (mostly) that don't align with botanical taxonomy

Over the following years, I observed how #millet and #millets were used (and misused) in describing these crops / foods. In 2023 - the International Year of Millets - I followed up with a short discussion of this issue and changes in usage we are witnessing.

Phasing out most bioenergy - the growing stuff to burn - would help (but obviously not solve the overall problem)

Keep in mind that that transportation has changed a lot since the days when there were many passenger ships on the Great Lakes.

Re freight shipping on the Lakes, I wonder if rail and eventually road reduced need / demand for moving material by boat.

Some estimates of the number of shipwrecks go higher than 6000 - but no one really knows. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

It may be important to keep saying it, but this is not at all a new problem. (From personal experience.)

FWIW, I’ve long thought that “zero carbon” is actually a more meaningful goal than “net zero.” The latter gives cover for sketchy accounting practices using carbon offsets (sin eating) & dubious carbon neutrality claims (such as burning forest biomass for power & bioenergy generally)

Ajami is still used by some for these languages. There are usage conventions, but lack of standardization limits utility. There are recent efforts to standardize (but at least one was based on systems outside of Africa)

Fwiw, in 1986-7 I studied Ajami for Pular using Arensdorff's 1913 (1966) book:

Wood-fired power generation is energy inefficient, environmentally unfriendly, & not “zero carbon” in any meaningful sense.
