the US took Puerto Rico offering a “banner of freedom”. The government was overwhelmed and couldn’t feed the people after the devastating hurricane in 1899, and conspired with Hawaiian sugar planters to thin the population. Between 6-10,000 Puerto Ricans were relocated to Hawaii under duress.
