My partner recommends Trudi Canavan's Black Magician trilogy, and I'd like to throw in all of Robin Hobb's work because she is just the best at writing awkward idiot teenage boys and I wish I'd read them when I was one so I could've been less of a dick.

I avoided him for most of my teen years on the basis I thought the Discworld series were silly and for kids and then I read Jingo and realised my mistake.

For non-fiction I think Dava Sobel's book on Longitude is excellent and The Shetland Bus and Sea Dog Bamse are both good reads (to keep it naval). I'd also recommend Peter Ross's books on graveyards and churches.
