I don't think they did not think it through. Hosting was moved and history on GH deleted to say FU to AI scraping. Project was considered "done" with no future releases. Rename happened for undisclosed reasons (but there were reasons) but was considered unimportant given no new releases ever.

To look at past examples: there were some communities heavily invested in Google+ (TTRPG is a good example) and a massive amount of valuable info was lost when G shut it down because line didn't go up. Whether bsky is good for artists or not is down to individuals. X doesn't work for Y is snake oil.

Is it great? It isn't but surface level numbers like these don't really tell anyone anything about platform viability for anything other than cheap engagement. It's easy to inflate these numbers: spam and rage bait would help massively.
