Gundam '79 *walked* so the franchise could soar.

Watching the entire first series makes the transition absolutely worth it. I really enjoyed the first series for intrinsic qualities, but it does get really really good and interesting in the last 1/4 because it was so low-key a s grounded for the first 3/4's. I think the first series is condensed into a trilogy of movies and would probably recommend watching that. Now I'm watching Gundam Zeta and I think I'm hooked now
