"Correlation does not equal causation" has had a chilling effect on what we've learnt from observational data in ecology & evolution (meanwhile obs data are widely used in medical analyses!). This paper lays out how ecologists can draw causal inferences from obs data doi.org/10.1111/ele....

Delighted to share that the '2023 Journal of Zoology Paper of the Year' was awarded to our collaborative publication "Do honey badgers and greater honeyguide birds cooperate to access bees’ nests? Ecological evidence and honey-hunter accounts."

The birds are suggested to lead the badger to a bees' nest, and then feed on leftover beeswax after the badger has fed. There are 6 stages to this interaction, and 2 are not well-supported by evidence: The badger notices the honeyguide and follows it.
