Wild Dolphin Project

WDP is the longest underwater dolphin research project in the world. We study the life history, behavior, and acoustics of a community of free-ranging dolphins in the Bahamas. Our core mission is to 'crack the code' of dolphin language.
Excited to share that Dr. Denise Herzing, Founder of the Wild Dolphin Project, is on the @TIME 2025 AI List! 🐬

Honored to be recognized for our work on dolphin communication with our partners from Georgia Tech, and work with Google DeepMind’s DolphinGemma.

At the Wild Dolphin Project, we study how dolphins communicate — using sounds and body language to hunt, socialize, and stay connected. Through photo ID, acoustic recordings, and long-term tracking, we’re learning how their social lives evolve and how human activity impacts them.

Happy Shark Awareness Day—a day to celebrate and highlight the research and conservation of these apex predators.

During our 4 decades of research, we've had the chance to observe many species: whale sharks, tiger sharks, great hammerheads and others.

🗓️ It’s #WorldEnvironmentDay & this year’s theme hits home: #BeatPlasticPollution.

We’ve seen dolphins play with plastic at our field site—this issue is real. 🌊

Cut single-use plastics. Choose reusables. Join cleanups. Act now.

This #WorldOceanMonth, we celebrate the wonder of the sea and the wild dolphins that inspire us daily.

Led by Dr. Denise Herzing, we've studied them for 40+ years—because wonder fuels science, and protection starts with curiosity.

Happy World Turtle Day!

Marine turtles have been gliding through the oceans for more than 150 million years—long before dinosaurs disappeared.

We're so lucky to regularly see them at our field site!

Dr. Denise Herzing’s new book Is Anyone Listening? was recently reviewed—and it’s sparking thoughtful reflection on the science of animal communication. 🐬📖

Dolphin bonding goes beyond just playful leaps and flips! One of the most noticeable behaviors is "pec rubs," where dolphins gently rub their pectoral fins together, reinforcing their social bonds.
