I’ve heard Trump described as a “strongman” in the political sense of an authoritarian or dictator. But he’s not a strong man. He’s a weak man playing strongman. And he’s backed by people who, for their own varied reasons, are willing to enable him. I doubt a single one respects him.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is a set of peaceful civilian vessels bringing humanitarian aid to Gaza. They are under attack. Americans are on board, including from Massachusetts. Italy and Spain are sending warships to protect them. The United States must do more to keep them safe.

Newsom shapes everything around the brute fact that Trump is serially breaking the law and using government sponsored violence and intimidation to entrench authoritarian power. He accepts this as the core fact of our moment.
