Yows (ewes) went to tups on Friday. Here are the girls put for cross breeding to my beautiful young Icelandic tup Raffles. I’m hoping do do more fiber work. #SmallFarmLife

Ten years ago I was in a new relationship with Sophie. It never occurred to me that by now one of my biggest worries would be that the colour of her skin would make her a target. Main-stream politicians talking about people like her creating ‘an island of strangers’.

We still suffer Orange marches, and occasionally there are ‘disturbances’ after football matches. And during the Troubles Glasgow was never bombed. Mind you the last time was exceptional circumstances.

Most of the time Sophie (my half Asian wife) and I live in our family and friends world. We have the usual ups and downs and worries of our small farm life, and our families lives. They are vivid and sometimes heartrending but patterns universal to human kind. People meet and love, quarrel, get ill.

So we have this rose bowl for a year, courtesy of the beauty of Monksfield Damaris, Penny’s kid, and our roses look rather fine in it, I think.

Well I hope they paid the excellent Val McDermid a shedload of dosh for mangling and sentimentalising her second Pirie novel.

While it’s vulgar to boast, Zoe got Reserve Champion Goat at Dumfries show yesterday and here she is with @chalcedonyvark.bsky.social. (Note for USA. In the UK red is first, blue is 2) #Goats #SmallFarmLife

Perfectly reasonable. I really hope the locals DO use loos. Oh wait, did the sub editor mean ‘dirty campers … ask to be allowed to use the locals’ loos’???? (I don’t mind ordinary bods getting English wrong. If you are paid to write it, try harder!)

It’s terribly hard to sleep through the kiss of life delivered by a loving and slightly worried collie. (Demi. Delphine loves her except when she forgets there’s a greyhound inside the bed and walks in her.)

Oh dear - I’m afraid that it’s dreadfully solemn and heavy. My subject (3rd Marquess of Bute, young, rich, orphaned) was having a dreadful fit of depression. In Jerusalem a Franciscan Friar taught him to offer his pain to Jesus as a concrete prayer and thus find meaning in it.

This is Demi. She’s a proper sheepdog and she’s come to help with our sheep.

Like most of Scottish smallholding I rely on Facebook to contact fellow small farmers. I’ve responded to ads and placed ads for years. I just wasn’t expecting the avalanche of offers that hit me when I asked for a sheepdog who could do a gentle level of work on my holding.

Given the way I react, I’d swallow hemlock of it kept clegs away.By then I could partially open my left eye. The bite can be seen on my forehead.

So so much to love. Daffodils - the very essence of spring. I also have a great fondness for willows, especially those who give us pussy willow, and particularly the astonishing pink catkins of the early-flowering Mount Aso. (Not a bril photo. January in a dark room)

For the first year in ever so long, I’ve managed to grow catmint. It turned out the trick was to grow it OUT of the aviary where the rest of the herbs and protected plants are. It was my owl who was destroying it.

Pangur is known to every animal on the holding and is friends with most of them. He keeps his frolicking for rodents, who don’t long survive it. This is his tactic, demonstrated on a tape measure.

Well, let’s see … Catherine lamb, Demaris Kid, and Pangur.

I was also supporting my wife with the multiple prize winning Kenside Lillie. The magnificent Lillie is a multiple prize winner and triumphed again.
