Mom. University of California, Santa Barbara Associate Professor studying aquaculture, fisheries, and climate change.
Dr. Claire Gonzales's second dissertation chapter is officially published! She explored the co-location suitability potential of bivalve #aquaculture (mussels) with clean energy (wind & wave) and wild capture fisheries across the California coast. Check it out: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Ever notice small scale #aquaculture (SSA) doesn't seem to get much attention? Us too. We ran a semi-quant synthesis of the the literature and found it is poorly defined, missing from the US & Europe, & underrepresented in marine systems (e.g., oysters) dx.doi.org/10.1111/raq....

My first PhD student successfully defended here dissertation and graduated! Huge congratulations to Dr. Claire Gonzales 🎉🎉🎉🎓🎓🎓 If you have social-ecological questions about co-location of clean energy and #aquaculture, ask her 🐟

3. Data disconnect. No reference or directive to improve aquaculture data. Yet, NOAA is well positioned to support and house better marine aquaculture data through the Fisheries Information Networks (FINs), which it can't do with all the employee and database cuts. 4/6

2. Aquaculture overlooked. The recent efforts largely focus on wild capture fisheries, while aquaculture takes a backseat. Aqua is the most regulated food sector, but is only mentioned twice in the new order, compared to 47 times 5 years ago. USDA cuts will hurt small scale farms more. 3/6

1) Regulatory dismantling instead of reform. Wild fisheries have rebounded bc of regulations, not in spite of them. Yet, one big distinction btw the orders is that there is only one mention of NOAA Fisheries & no mention of sustainability. Loss of Chevron deference is also doing no favors. 2/6

@jagephart.bsky.social & I have just published an
assessment of the new U.S. #Seafood Executive Order, alongside other politically disruptive actions that puts America last. We find 4 troubling escalations & contd misunderstandings of our seafood sector. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... 🧵1/6

On a lighter note, an undergrad in my lab, Andi McNeil, ranked and presented all state fishes for fun (yes that is a thing still!). How can Indiana not have one and why do so many states only have eyes for striped bass??

Preparing for my daughter’s 3rd birthday. Why, yes that is a giant isopod and hatchet fish going into the party favors.

Preprint is now up: “Uncertain seafood sustainability in a manufactured crisis”, written with the brilliant @jagephart.bsky.social. We identified 4 major differences/escalations of the 2025 Seafood EO order compared to 2020 and review each. doi.org/10.31223/X5G...

Just reviewed the demands letter the government sent to Harvard. Strong McCarthy vibes with this administration. Here are just a few of the most insane. Full letter here: s3.documentcloud.org/documents/25...

Disintegration of regulatory structure and function = INSTABILITY (not more aquaculture per se, for now)

From NASA to NOAA. The scientists and science that were and may never be. What an embarrassing, unnecessary, and harmful loss for the country.

Received a really thoughtful email from a student today. Not only did she love learning about fisheries & aquaculture, she liked my fashion. Ultimate professor status unlocked 💅

Just a reminder that people in the U.S., regardless of political affiliation, tend to favor government and polluters paying for conservation efforts...sigh.

Just trying to compartmentalize current chaos and grow some kelp on long lines in vertical tanks I custom designed for my lab 🥲

“#Aquaculture is heavily subsidized” seems relative. It’s seemingly so small it was added to wild capture fisheries? Regardless, nice step in comparative data capture.

Working with spectacular NOAA scientists, we just published "Marine spatial planning and best siting practices to achieve an ecosystem approach to #aquaculture in the United States." An idea started 6 yr ago to guide future siting & planning, finally out! 🐟🌊 www.ingentaconnect.com/content/umrs...
