Most Canadian see value in educating the next generation and producing trainees that will work in our hospitals, universities and industry for the benefit of all. Almost always this is done at a loss via subsidy, but we see the value in this investment. This diverges from a US business ethos 2/2.

See that is a very American way of thinking about academia. Functionally sure, you have a budget you have staff, you bid on contracts (ie your grants) and you produce a product (trainees and knowledge) but… I live in a social democracy in Canada. Tax payers primarily fund our research 1/2

Then there are MAJOR differences in the ethos and supports for (and training and expectations of work and teaching) for long-time non-tenured/non-permanent staff positions in Canada, USA versus Europe. Dalhousie allows all Ph.D. level staff to obtain FGS status - think about that, its a big deal 2/2

A ratio probably won't help in this regard. Ostensibly, good postdoctoral training includes mentorship and training graduate and undergraduate students. Good RAs sometimes love teaching, and facilitating their access to teaching and mentorship provides job satisfaction (i.e. they stick around). 1/2

For sure Lockheed … they do this for emissions standards too - they suck.

F*ckin hate those. Scary when they happen but generally benign.

Day Trading is gambling for sure. And, now you can actually gamble on pretty much anything. e.g. what is the over-under on BC Premier Eby having a conniption over Carney's announcement about an Alberta pipeline to West coast tidal water? Sure bet?

My issues with crypto are that a) it uses a ton of compute resources, which could exceed AI queries if the entire planet goes crypto; b) buying/selling costs and manipulation risks; c) it needs government/resource/currency backing to actually be safe; & d) money laundering via crypto is rampant. /2

After the slow death of Canada's own Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), there is a private Canadian Dollar Stablecoin (QCAD) - which is ostensibly "real" fiat currency backed (i.e. the CDN $). And there is XRP, which is likely the next SWIFT. 1/2 www.theglobeandmail.com/investing/ma...

I hate to say it but human/mouse model scientists are sometimes to blame for recoining new names for old biology already worked out in yeast, plants, flies and worms. The reverse is also true, but rarer. I blame our academic merit system that rewards "primacy" even if an illusion 90% of the time.

Rural farm/orchard kid here too… my entire work ethic comes from picking fruit every Summer through the 80s and getting up at 5 am to clean out the chicken coup and feed the pigs (@ 9-11 years old). I still hate pigs to this day.

In another era you might have filed a complaint for that comment 😂 - glad it worked out. 💪 #SkookumScience

I think being skeptical should be the “default setting” for all scientists evaluating new findings. The only reproducibility metric that matters is actually reproducing findings with increasing rigour.
