I started playing pinball regularly as a postdoc. It was a way to process my emotions after failed experiments. And I had lots of failed experiments as a postdoc. Kept playing as an assistant prof to manage my emotions around, well, being an assistant professor.

I turned 40 years old the same month my department voted 'overwhelmingly' for my tenure and promotion. We rented out the local pinball arcade for a combined 40th birthday/tenure party.

Agree with the framing that LLM / machine learning (regression with huge data and processing might) has really changed and will continue to change how we operate as scientists. Also agree that “AI” is not a well defined term or goal. With undefined goals and crazy resources going in… 1999 anyone?

Professor here. 2025 is the year that students used AI to do their assignments, and professors used AI to grade the assignments. Recognizing this folly, many of us are moving assignments back to pen and paper. We will still need the TAs.
