Film, at this point in time, was not made to be viewed on a CRT with scanlines. Making it not the ideal form factor for this piece of art, nor the intended way to experience it.

This did have the opposite effect on film. Where movies had to undergo pan and scan which would obscure large portions of the frame. So it was either you watched it in a lower resolution with letterboxing or you missed details with pan-and-scan.

Which led to the want for larger TVs.

This was also used by games like Super Mario RPG or Donkey Kong Country to fake 3D models. Clearer images are nice, but not always what was intended by the developers.

It absolutely makes sense - especially with film and TV. However retro games were built for CRTs. The poor quality of the TV was something that these games utilized to create transparency effects and use color-bleed to create colors or effects that wouldn't exist with a limited palette.
