America has always been an oligarchy (rule of the wealthy few) but the concentration of power and wealth is more extreme now (in the Second Gilded Age) than in the Post-New Deal Era. Laissez faire economic policy led to the First Gilded Age and neo-liberal economic policies led to the Second.
