Tired of all the cold and snow? Well I have some good news for you! Above average warmth returns next week, with 40s likely Tuesday at least Friday! And the warmth could stick around a while. Not to be a Grinch, but that likely means won't have a white Christmas this year.🫤

After a quiet Friday, snow moves back in for your Saturday! Winter Weather Advisories are in place for Saturday morning from northwest Iowa through the metro to the southeast. Snow starts before sunrise, wrapping up around Noon. Expect 2-3" of fresh snow with pockets up to 4"!

I know we're still digging out from yesterday's big snow... but there is a chance for snow again tomorrow! Thankfully, this looks pretty light. An inch or two max across southern Iowa. Generally an inch or less along I-80, including the Des Moines metro.

This was quite the storm for central Iowa! A wide area picking up 6 to 12 inches of snow, Fort Dodge the big winner reporting 15 inches falling. The metro area saw generally 7 to 12 inches of snow. Here's just a few of the reports from across the area.

❄️Snow Update: A winter storm is on track to affect Iowa starting Friday night! A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for nearly all of the state. Forecast data continue to support heavy snow amounts, it appears central Iowa has the potential to pick up as much as 6-10" of snow!

🚨 Saturday is a Weather Alert Day: Snow develops Friday night with moderate to occasionally heavy snow expected most of Saturday. Totals could easily exceed 6" for parts of the area leading to some pretty difficult travel conditions! Delay/adjust travel plans if you can.

Saturday is a Weather Alert Day! The seasons first significant snow appears to be on the way... and we could be talking some deep snow for some. Light snow Friday evening, steadier snow Saturday with some 5+ totals likely. I'd avoid travel on Saturday around Iowa if you can!

Beautiful sunrise this morning over downtown Des Moines! However ... I think it's best enjoyed inside today... wind chills are in the single digits right now!
November 9, 2025 at 12:55 PM
Bridges & overpasses near Ft. Dodge are starting to become snow covered! The rain/snow line is slowly dropping south toward the Hwy 30 corridor. North of that line, where it has flipped to snow, it's coming down at a good clip at times! Closer to I-80 we're staying mostly rain.

TRAFFIC ALERT: I-35/80 SB/WB is at a complete standstill right now due to a crash just past Hickman that is blocking multiple lanes. Avoid this route if you can. Emergency crews are on scene
October 10, 2025 at 6:57 PM
A crash involving multiple vehicles has several lanes blocked on I-35/80 SB just back Hickman in the construction area right now. This is creating a backup through the rider corner. Expect significant delays if you are heading that direction right now!

Another beautiful fall day across the state! Temperatures are little warmer than yesterday, pushing into the low 70s for just about everyone. Just a bit of southeast breeze at times. That breeze will keep us mild into the evening. Watching for some spotty showers overnight.
October 9, 2025 at 8:28 PM
Did you happen to catch our little glimpse of sunshine as the sun was rising? Made for a really great looking sunrise! Unfortunately ... that's probably about all the sunshine we'll see today as the clouds and showers stick around for the bulk of your Monday.
October 6, 2025 at 1:06 PM
Another wave of light rain has overspread the metro early this morning, and you can expect more on and off rain showers through the day! Not raining all day, but rain will be around all day. That keeps us rather cool! Stuck in the 50s all day it looks like.
October 6, 2025 at 12:09 PM
Scattered light to moderate rain shows will continue to push east across mainly central and southern Iowa through the morning hours. While the rain isn't terribly heavy, it will slowly add up, and will keep the roads wet through the morning drive!
October 6, 2025 at 10:28 AM
Beautiful sunrise here in Des Moines this morning! The sun just now popping up above the horizon, sunrises getting later and later now that we're in the fall season. Though it will not feel like Fall again today as highs push back into the mid-80s!
September 28, 2025 at 12:10 PM
I think we can safely say it was chilly this morning! Quite a few 30s on the map to start the day, northwest Iowa even saw our first Frost Advisory of the season. If you're not quite ready for the fall weather to stick around, good news! Summer warmth returns by Monday afternoon!
September 7, 2025 at 12:51 PM
If you watching with us this morning.... this is the view of the full moon setting over Creston I was talking about a moment ago. Really cool view to start the day!
September 7, 2025 at 11:33 AM
We saw a pretty cool start this morning, but already starting to warm up nicely! Should make it into the mid to upper 60s this afternoon. Now... that is about 10-15 degrees below average but it should feel pretty nice! More summer warmth is on the way next week.
September 6, 2025 at 2:02 PM
Just a few people lining up on Hwy 30 in Ames this morning! Traffic building around Jack Trice Stadium as we get closer to kickoff. Going to be a cool start, but feeling nice by this afternoon!
September 6, 2025 at 1:23 PM
Chilly but beautiful sunrise over downtown Des Moines on this Saturday morning! Hope you're able to enjoy this cool weather, keeping in mind summer warmth is back next week if you're not ready for fall just yet!
September 6, 2025 at 11:45 AM
Watch out for some patchy fog this morning, especially just north and west of the metro! A Dense Fog Advisory has been issued for northwestern Iowa. Areas around Carroll, Fort Dodge, Perry, and Boone are seeing more scattered pockets of dense fog. Slow down if you encounter fog!
September 2, 2025 at 11:08 AM
Keeping an eye on a line of showers and storms that have kicked off along a cold front moving into Iowa. These storms will continue to slowly push east & southeast. Could be near the Des Moines metro by 7 to 9pm.
August 22, 2025 at 9:31 PM
Below average temperatures (highs in the 70s, maybe a few 60s!?) are likely as we head toward the first week of school and the tail end of August! A nice break from the heat and humidity is just a few days away.

Hurricane Erin is looking very intense over the Atlantic this morning! Erin exploded overnight becoming a Category 4 storm, wind speeds are now up to 145mph! Thankfully, it appears Erin will remain off shore through mid-week, keeping threats limited to high surf and rip currents.
