Google focuses on big impact projects.

If a product isn't meeting standards (like Google+ or Glass), they kill it.

This frees up resources for the dips—the projects they use to dominate markets they're in.

The lesson:

Quit poorly performing projects.

And assign resources where you can win big!

Michael Jordan is a top basketball player who used rejection as fuel.

He was cut from the varsity team in school.

Through intense dedication and practice, he conquered the dip.

MJ won six NBA championships!

The last path is The Cliff.

It feels rewarding for a time but ends in a sharp collapse.

Gambling addiction is an example.

You lose a bit, and eventually, you lose it all before you realize.

If you're on a cliff, exit immediately!

Only pursue the dips that lead to you becoming your best self.

The second path is a Cul-de-sac.

It's a dead end, comfortable enough to keep you trapped.

An example is a job with no promotion opportunities.

If you're in a cul-de-sac, recognize the dead end and strategically quit.

Only pursue worthwhile dips where you can achieve mastery and success.

Seth presents three paths you can take.

The first is The Dip.

It shows the journey between starting and mastery.

When you start something, it’s fun.

But eventually, fun fades.

Setbacks hit.

The desire to quit comes.

Understand that every goal worth achieving requires you to conquer a dip.

The biggest rewards are for the best and most favored.

Seth presents Zipf's Law:

It says a small number of items or individuals account for large demand or success; the majority gets less.

Ex. Vanilla dominates other flavors in ice cream sales.

So, strive to become the "vanilla" of your field.

So, what do you focus on?

Seth says to choose worthwhile challenges.

He believes you should pick a field where you can become the best in the world.

With many options and the temptation to stick to what's safe, finding the greatest opportunity for you to thrive is key.

I read Contagious by Jonah Berger.

The book is about why ideas and products go viral.

Jonah is a Wharton professor who studies behavior, social influence, and marketing.

He created the STEPPS framework!

It helps you make your ideas more shareable and memorable.

Here are the STEPPS:

Your decisions and behavior are guided by six primary needs.

When you learn them, you can have a better understanding of why you do certain things.

It will also help you understand other people's behavior.

The "6 Human Needs" was created by Tony Robbins.
