But her go-to (as a speculative fiction writer) is to assess how this world works, what it affords her, and how she can make glitches in the system work for her.

To fit into society - or to rebuild a new society - she has to learn how to integrate her emotions into her words. She has to figure out how to relate, to empathize, and to persuade.

…And when she sees footage of her emotions, she’s disturbed and rejects it and erases it.

Carol is a best selling novelist: she knows how to talk to other people. But she doesn’t know how to express her re al feelings to them, or to herself.

Carol‘s novels don’t reveal how she really feels. Carol‘s interactions with her readers don’t reveal how she actually feels. The rage expressed to the We around her is real, and has disastrous consequences. It is only to the video camera that she inadvertently reveals how she feels.

That’s how I would break down this episode: conversations to voicemail, conversations to a video camera, muttering to herself, but mostly silence as we watched Carol deal with objects and animals in her environment.

if you were lucky there might be a long essay to help you decide whether to shell out for this LP or that one. Of course you knew that the liner notes were selling you on the record — that's what you wanted! A hint of what the music sounded like,
