Got to read “Watercress” to students this week to discuss plot v theme. @andreaywang.bsky.social writes a beautiful book to read out loud - the alliteration feels beautiful. @authorjasonchin.bsky.social created beautiful illustrations that demand the reader’s attention. (1/2)

I am behind on books! Taught “Call Me Roberto!” this week. Illustration and story are top-notch. The author, Nathalie Alonso, writes for mlb.com so we were able to read a post of hers with videos that cover evnts in the book! Love a chance for multimedia in storytime www.mlb.com/news/roberto...

Got called a racist today. By a white kid in reference to white people. Job well done, me.

Read this a few years ago, taught with it today. Christie is one of my favorite illustrators. Rockliff does a great job of intertwining history and food, which kept my exceptional Ed students’ attention. We loved learning about Georgia Gilmore and her support of the Montgomery Bus Boycott!

#ALAyma @geneluenyang.bsky.social and Leuyen Pham’s “Lunar New Year Love Story” is adorable and made me squee even though I am not a romance girl usually. Also, Val’s grandma is my new favorite person.

Taking a break from my regularly scheduled Gamecock WBB fandom to say Go to Hell Carolina. #LetsGoDuke

#ALAyma this great graphic memoir really spoke to my solitary childhood moments. Macleod does a beautiful job writing & illustrating what it was like to grow up between 2 places, and feeling different in many ways. It made me want to tell every younger iteration of myself that I was doing my best.

Continuing my #alayma journey with this moving graphic novel, “The Girl Who Sang.” This book was thrilling, moving, and a moving tribute to a family’s love for each other. I am so glad Nadel was able to write her story down before her passing ❤️

It’s #alayma time! Brownstone is such a great story with complicated & loveable characters. The artwork is topnotch & complements the text perfectly. I may have cried just a lil bit. Thank you @marjulia.bsky.social & @samuelteer.bsky.social for writing a book that feels specific & universal at once.

The @amlibraryassoc.bsky.social Youth Media Awards were today, which means I will be reading the Asian/Pacific American Award for Lit. picture book winner “Aloha Everything” tomorrow with my exceptional ed students tomorrow! Beautiful art and story. Can’t wait to learn Hawaiian words with them 😊

A lot happens in these 200 pages - but a lot happens to our students on the day-to-day! Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women provides the backbone, but the book faces down animal and child abuse. But ultimately it is grounded in family, friendship, and love. Wren’s Elisi is my new fave grandma

Snow days = reading days! I love everything Hena Khan writes, and this is no exception! Based on a true story, it is a great look at high school sports, and the reality of kids who are viewed as “different” … often they just want to be kids! Also, women’s basketball is the best!

This lovely sweet story and the world it is set in will be in my head for awhile. I hate kindness when it is cheesy and weaponized … I loved it here. I loved all the animals, and want Harold the crow to be my bestie. Seriously, cats and crows were both hilarious. Thanks @kellybarnhill.bsky.social

This school year I received a grant from the SC Council on the Holocaust. One of the books I purchased was “Impossible Escape” by Steve Sheinkin and dang is it good. I feel decently well read on this subject and did not know about Rudi Vrba. I think my students will love this one!

Next up was “The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman” by @choldenko.bsky.social and it hit me in the feels. Hard. Hank and his sister are characters you find yourself rooting for. I love it when middle grade books make this seasoned adult a lil misty ❤️

PHEW. I love LeZotte’s books, & feel like I learn something Deaf culture AND experience all of the emotions too. The narrator of this book is amazing. I loved learning more about ASL & some of its language rules. I also felt for all the children who aren’t given what they deserve from their family 😭

First read aloud of the year was “We Celebrate the Light” by Jane Yolen and @heidieys.bsky.social , illustrated by Jieting Chen. We made sun catchers in preparation for Lunar New Year!

Ekua Holmes is one of my favorite living illustrators. Nikki Giovanni blurbed this book. Renee Watson wrote the amazing poetry. These are poems to read and re-read, then read out loud. Immediate library purchase.

Reading about cults is kind of my jam … this story about a girl deprogramming after her mom takes them away was so absorbing I read it in one morning! @kloshaughnessy.bsky.social thanks for hitting my reading sweet spot!

My 1st @markdoesstuff.bsky.social of the year! They do such an amazing job of writing grief, and showing that it can be a long process. (I know I will probably be walking into the kitchen looking for Baby Kitty forever!) Also, it’s just a good, creepy story that highlights the strength of family!

This December, I am reading books from the perspective of Jim. Just finished Big Jim and the White Boy and shed a few tears; what a beautiful graphic novel that explores narrative and story-telling and family history. A few chapters into James, and loving it already.

I have spent this weekend trying to recover from multiple parents accosting me at the spelling bee about how I pronounced words at the spelling bee. For the record, I know the phonetic alphabet, and pronounced them exactly how Scripps told me to …
