Ace/autistic biracial biogeochemist. I study life + trace metal cycling + reactive oxygen species & teach analytical chem. Also union gal, bookworm, Youtuber, DV survivor w/ PTSD. She/they. My views are my own and not those of my institution.
I told all of my kids--all of whom were planning tech careers when starting college--that for their physical science gen ed, they should take geology.

One refused to take my advice. One of them liked it. One of them loved it. And the fourth loved it so much that he took 2 more geo classes for fun.

I'm in a department that does give credit towards this for tenure and promotion.

But we still need to pay reviewers.

My dad and I are technically both chemists but we are about as opposite as two chemists can be in terms of what we study.

Dad was a computational organic chemist (ab initio). Theory, theory, theory.

Meanwhile, I'm out looking at chemistry in the natural world.

Anyway a few years after that I found the interdisciplinary geochemistry program at Colorado School of Mines that takes students with either geology OR chemistry backgrounds. And the rest is history.

I figured I had more of a track record with chemistry, so switched my major to that.

Fast forward to over a decade later, when I had a convo with a geochemist at an outreach event. I told myself sadly, "I should have chosen geology." (3/)

Why was it not my thing? Because my dad was a chemist, and what teenager wants to be like their dad? Not me, that was for sure.

Fast forward to end of sophomore year of college...my current major wasn't working for me & I knew I should choose between geology or chemistry... (2/)

People ask me how I like living in the U.P. They think I'll say that I hate the winters or something. (I don't.) Instead I say that we are sorely lacking in good ethnic food...

Seriously, that is one of the worst things about this place.

Love it.

In case you're wondering, much of what it said was correct, but it left out some really important information and didn't even correctly answer the prompt...

So basically, it would have gotten a C- on the assignment.

Oh no PEZ

Also, WTF, anyone who knows anything about PezHaus knows that it is full of gremlins

There is not a single large platform that has taken feminists’ demands seriously and met them on survivors’ terms. Not one.

They’re literally using a “look what she made me do” defense to breakdown solidarity and convince everyone to look the other way as their platforms get more violent.
