Tomorrow is 11.11, AKA "Singles Day", which is basically AliExpress Prime Day...though it's debatable if Prime Day prices are even deals.

I'm not eyeing much, but I've been waiting to grab parts for a hypothetical cyberdeck project. Primarily a low profile mechanical keyboard, and some adapters.

Huzzah! I got AAS's Ultra Analogue working too! I found mention of a workaround for AAS plugins on the yabridge page. Apparently AAS plugins autodetect when the DAW is Bitwig and "get fancy" with text entry.

So huzzah! My AAS plugins all work on Linux.

I have a uConsole, which fills that need for me. Extremely cool, but I can't thumb type as quickly I can keyboard type. 😉

And I got AAS's guitar, string, and modular synth plugins also working... though the modular is crackly.

Their plugin Ultra Analogue segfaults when run via the bridge, though the standalone app does run. Ah well, not as important to me as Chromaphone and the string/guitar simulators.

Got it!!!... by switching VST hosting apps. Switching to yabridge (away from LinVST) did the trick. Once properly configured everything just worked.

It works better too! A glitch I saw in LinVST made windows hang around for a bit before closing. Not an issue for yabridge

Okay, it's not the problem I was expecting (failing to set real-time priority), but hey a clue is a clue.
November 10, 2025 at 5:13 AM
I've made *some* progress. Other plugins that are entirely standalone seem to work, and running the tester app does seem to work, but ... actually I think I have an idea...
November 10, 2025 at 5:02 AM
I don't have any Windows VST plugins working in Linux Bitwig yet, but it is pretty magic how flawlessly the standalone app for this plugin works from Wine. 😀
November 10, 2025 at 4:08 AM
Anyway, being realistic, I'd like to see if I can get some of my VST without Linux builds working in Linux (via Wine). Unfortunately not everyone is as cool as @plogue.com. 😉

I've gone ahead and updated Bitwig, so here we go!

Feeling the music itch, but first world problems. 😅

I've got a bunch of unique audio gear that I wish I could just "remote into" and start playing. The Roland SoundCanvas is probably the best known, but the Yamaha MU and the Korg with the "SotN soundfont" are pretty sweet too.

I also run Linux. 😖

Eep! This external drive no longer works. 😅

I think I cooked a few traces. I discovered there was some sort of epoxy in the backside of the USB connector (waterproofing?), and a couple traces don't seem to be there anymore. 😅

On the upside, I do know the guts are ok. 😅

YT Video: "Hall effect keyboards are getting too cheap"

ME: "SHUT YOUR FACE"

This argument/statement is forever shit regardless of the technology. Stop saying it. We don't live in a world where things becoming affordable hurts people; We live in one where things being unaffordable do! #Pedantic

Best I can tell, the most affordable eDP to DP boards are these Mini DP boards, which are ~$10 including a cable. There are full sized DisplayPort versions too.

The gotcha is that eDP comes in 40 pin and 30 pin flavors, with the 40 pins potentially having 0.5mm, 0.4mm, or 0.3mm pin spacings.

Okay, no USB here with the sole exception of the power button which is actually a USB fingerprint sensor. Neat.

Otherwise the keyboard is 8-input and 16-output pins, and the touchpad is I2C. I like that Framework documented how to make the I2C touchpad work standalone.

I got wondering if I could somehow connect the keyboard as a USB device, but short answer is no. Also how to use the keyboard without the trackpad is not obvious, as it (and the backlight) use the trackpad as a hub before connecting to the motherboard.

Welp, TO THE WIKI for pinouts... 😋

In my grab bags I received two IPS LCD panels, two full keyboards with trackpads, a spare trackpad, and a 256GB addon drive.

Last I checked the 256GB drive wouldn't detect, so I disassembled it to look for clues. Plugged it into my PC to learn it actually only works only in one USB-C orientation. 😱
November 9, 2025 at 9:04 PM
This morning I remembered that I have some untested bare IPS LCD panels, untested 'cause I didn't know how. 😅

Quick lookup, apparently there is an eDP or embedded DisplayPort standard. These panels are eDP 1.4, so I need to find a suitable adapter (to DP/HDMI), then forgot about it for 2-3 weeks. 😅

I'm not a big fan of trackpads (Trackpoint FTW), but I like this unusual Logitech keyboard. Left thumb can click the mouse via the yellow button, and the right thumb can move the cursor via the pad. Got me thinking that adding keyboard side grips and borrowing from a Steam Controller has potential.
November 9, 2025 at 6:05 AM
Clamshell style is interesting, but it can end up a little boxy or uncomfortable with protrusions on the keyboard size. Also a true flat closing clamshell will be problematic; It wouldn't fit around the mechanical keyboard. That said a veil similar to professional coloring displays could work.
November 9, 2025 at 5:48 AM
My initial concept was some sort of dual folding device like a laptop without a track pad. Part sitting on your lap is a low profile mechanical keyboard, connected to a normal hinged display, with a 2nd smaller hinged display on top.

That said, the flat folding device with half screen intrigues me.
November 9, 2025 at 5:25 AM
This example where the device *appears* to dock with a regular monitor or TV and the built-in screen acts as a secondary display also seems very practical. In practice the Mac Mini in the background is actually what's running. Still, I think this overpriced keyboard is on to something. 🤔
November 9, 2025 at 5:15 AM
I'm casually exploring the idea of a practical cyberdeck (AKA weird laptop). To me, practical means it's designed around a mechanical keyboard (else what the point), and it needs to be usable on a lap.

To my surprise, there are several combo mecha keyboards and displays, that catch the vibe.

TIPS: I warm the tortilla in the microwave for ~10 seconds to soften. My go-to creamy Caesar dressing is Renes; You can taste the Parmesan and black pepper in it 🤤. My Buffalo sauce comes from unused frozen chicken wings/nuggets packets that I defrost and bottle; Franks works too.
