In the 19th century the hills that are now Harriman State Park were dotted with iron mines, part of a larger mining district in the Ramapo Highlands. These mine supplied iron to several local blast furnaces where it was smelted and turned into iron for tools, industry, and even Civil War munitions.By the late 19th century most of these workings had become unprofitable and were abandoned, their flooded adits and rust-stained rock walls slowly reclaimed by the forest.

“New Bright Idea” was the brand name of a cast-iron heating boiler made by Gurney, a Canadian maker of stoves and boilers. Old specs for schools and public buildings mention Gurney New Bright Idea sectional cast iron heating boiler. This is almost certainly one of the cast-iron doors from that boiler (an ash clean-out or inspection door) that’s been set into a block wall, either still covering some old boiler or just reused as a decorative industrial relic.
