In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.
The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.
The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.
Why?
It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

Over 50,000 lives could be lost when the Big One hits WA, with a massive tsunami arriving in just 10–15 min. Communities ARE building tsunami vertical evacuation structures to save lives -- and we support more being built.

We haven't solved the problem of nuclear waste, we've seen what happens when disasters hit nuclear power plants, we're seeing what happens when war comes to regions with nuclear reactors, and yet you're STILL treated like a fear monger if you say you're anti nuclear power.
House without a bathroom: DOE has no permanent disposal facility for nuclear waste, leaving taxpayers on the hook for payments of up to $800 million every year in damages, a bill that has reached $11.1 billion since 1998, and could grow to $44.5 billion www.cnbc.com/2025/11/09/n...
New U.S. nuclear power boom begins with old, still-unsolved problem: What to do with radioactive waste
As government and industry, from tech giants to utilities, commit to big nuclear power plants, there is still no clear solution for radioactive waste storage.

I had the distinct pleasure to spend World #TsunamiDay in Long Beach, WA yesterday, including a VERY windy visit to North Head Lighthouse. I visited this light so often with my parents as a child and it features in my memorial tattoo for my father. It's always an honor to be in its presence!

Happy World #TsunamiDay to all who celebrate - which should be all of us, because you never know where you'll be when disaster strikes. Preparedness and mitigation make us all safer regardless of where we live, especially as our world is increasingly connected on a global scale.

This is so disappointing. Folks think we're a hard blue state, but we're not. We could flip red more easily than we want to admit. Every vote counts, every year.
Less than 20% of registered voters across WA had returned their ballots as of 5 p.m. Monday. That puts the state on track for record low turnout. Data shows returns lagging even in places with high-profile contests for offices like county executive and mayor. Voters can return ballots until 8 p.m.

Hey, so fyi... If you wouldn't get on a social platform and be like "LOL my crazy Christian friends and their silly beliefs in a false god" or "haha, it's so awkward when my Jewish friends pray, like, omg it's not real guys" then maybe don't do it about your pagan or witchy friends' beliefs either?

TRUTH. I used to tell people to get whatever grant submission or management experience you can bc that's huge in our field and employers love it. But if the grants dry up, what good does that do?
As we see now, having a career in disaster management is very much intertwined with political decisions: Do disaster agencies exist (e.g., USAID, threats to FEMA)? Is there funding for private sector disaster jobs? Are disaster NGOs being targeted by politicians? Can you still get a degree in EM?
