This could easily spiral into Steve internalizing all this shit and taking it into every future relationship. Suddenly he’s responsible for this person’s life, and he /cannot/ break up with them. He stays in miserable relationships for so long because it /cannot/ be his fault again

This ^ being the explosive moment makes so much sense. Dustin trying to find anyone to blame besides Eddie (and himself, a little) for Eddie’s death, and Steve having ‘failed’ in his role as protector—maybe their breakup, in Dustin’s eyes, pushed Eddie towards self-sacrifice (the meanest timeline)
