Why is this such a big deal to me personally?

Because I'm Romani. I didn't know until I was 29 because it was something my family had hidden. It's still not discussed within my family due to shame and fear.

Heathcliff is Romani. It's explicitly mentioned within the first five pages that he is Romani.

His character development hinges on his race as it what lead him to be so abused and racially othered as a child. That abuse and separation is what led him to be the man he is.

Her works consistently get misinterpreted as "dark romance" when they're not. Her novels are tragedies. They're horrors about womanhood in that era.

I've been reading Bronte's work since middle school because I was homebound with illness and had nothing better to do but read. It's one of the reasons one of my areas of speciality in my English Major was Victorian Literature (other one was Shakespearean Lit)
