American in Aotearoa New Zealand. Filmmaker (Gut Instinct [2024], Jake [2014], etc), musician (The Sea Plus), helpful guy.
Watching WE ALL LOVED EACH OTHER SO MUCH and keep pausing to shoot pics of the telly that would come in handy one day here if it weren't for the crazy refraction patterns

That was fun, and reminded me how much I love 80% of TROMPE LE MONDE. And they had a great time, and Emma fits in very well.

Interesting trivia question spurred by post-show research: without looking, can you name the highest-charting Pixies album? (It's the only one to break the top 40.)

I feel like the *most* Portland film I ever saw in my time there was Penny Allen's PROPERTY, which is an esoteric choice (and there's no shortage of Van Sant films, DIG!, MR. BROOKS, THE HUNTED etc etc), but those who've seen it will get what I'm talking about

I was in Houston when I first saw PARIS, TEXAS. I had a confusing not-quite-relationship and saw it with said "partner", and belatedly realised it was truly over during the last shot, which passed the freeway exit I lived near.

Coincidentally, I'm sure, the first movie I cried at.

Almost nobody's seen it, which is a shame, but per today's film meme, DINNER IN AMERICA is the only film I'm aware of to shoot in the Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills (or at least adjacent Farmington)

Going to Beastwars at Meow Nui later (anyone else going), and got to see two strong young Wellington bands last night, Mudgoose and Dropper. Kids are still listening to Wilco and Hüsker Dü!

This is cheeky, but fuck it: GUT INSTINCT. Available on AroVision, but happy to send you a screener link.

According to Tidal, Kendra Smith put out a new album in 2022. Perhaps this is a seventh way of disappearing - to have your identity subsumed by algorithmic confusion.

Oh shucky darn I was going to watch something else but it's Godzilla Day so I guess I *have* to watch a Godzilla movie. What suffering.

Today is the one year anniversary of GUT INSTINCT premiering at the Terror-Fi Film Festival after a seven year gestation. Grateful for everyone that's helped bring it into the world, hosted it at their cinema, or praised it on Letterboxd.

It still awaits an international festival premiere, btw...

Not sure but think there's going to be symbolism involved in this film

Hi team if you don't hear from me it's because I'm drowning in 29 CDs worth of electroacoustic bliss (note: actual bliss results may vary from subject to subject)

Decided to ask ChatGPT for a second opinion, just out of curiosity, and it gives me a fresh appreciation for why many people I know are switching to ChatGPT from Google.

I'm reflexively cynical about ChatGPT, but I'm impressed.

I'm not sure which of these two screengrabs hurts my brain more.

I kind of breezed past a lot of Russian silents back in the day, and STRIKE is currently blowing my mind. The sheer embodied meaning of this cut - from the abandoned machines to the striking workers in the field plotting their demands - is so striking, and these moments are so common in this film.

Made twenty stills for GUT INSTINCT EPK, of which I believe these were the most frequently used.

The Polish Brothers own this. You could do six different posts. Here's one.

And some more. The Milford Graves and Craig Baldwin books are both astounding, particularly the latter, but both are in "would save in case of fire" status.

Not sure if these are 15-17, but they were definitely some books I forgot to say that I read.

It's Friday somewhere, and these are my last four films: a terrific obscure doco on a plane, the inauguration of my new 4k player, and two films at the mighty Civic. (Back in a "don't rate local films" phase, but WENT UP THE HILL is one of the most visually accomplished local films I've seen.)

Brought home my first UHD player and testing it out with GWEN AND THE BOOK OF SAND. Not sure if this film is incomprehensible or it's the jet lag but it's so ravishing I don't care. Great work @deafcrocodile.bsky.social

(Also I keep getting reminded of Andrew Todd's never-made STILT WARRIORS)
