It's that magical time of year, when the more unapologetically rage-baiting parts of our press dust off the "they're cancelling christmas!" stories. Thank you Telegraph, Express and Mail - it wouldn't be winterval without you! 😍

@thenewworldmag.bsky.social Pretty savage Codeword this week! If I solve this, do I get out of Slough House?

A real treat to spend a weekend with good books by fine friends.

In Liverpool for SLSA. First stop after hotel? Yeah, that'll be Specsavers.

Did anyone else read this title all wrong: with "new research associates" as the subject and "butter" as the verb? Imagine my confusion ... 🤔

Glorious return from @hamishhawk.bsky.social to Thekla last night. We made sure not to be stuck at the back this time!

UK Govt: "Unleash the AI, for it shall help us find the potholes!"

Meanwhile in Scotland...

But the pot-holes, Kate, how else will we find the pot-holes?? 🤷‍♂️

I mean, I'm not a complete cynic about it all, but the 'unleash AI ... grow the economy' chat is just a teensy bit redolent of this ...

So is the current narrative really that the last Government was too cautious about AI, and not sufficiently pro-innovation? 🤔

Dear BC Ferries, are we having a good festive season?
December 29, 2024 at 1:16 AM
Celebrating Second Christmas in Vancouver. This time-travelling business is quite fun.

Our first Dunedin house! Doesn't look to have changed much in 16 years ...

Morning coffee, Otago Peninsula.

Great to be back on the best running route ever. Sadly, the performance did not match ...
December 22, 2024 at 2:34 AM
Here, with a good book and a coffee. Yeah, that'll do nicely.

I don't know if it's curious to be posting this on the day I give a keynote on privacy and tech, but anyway, here's my Spotify most played for 2024.
December 5, 2024 at 7:12 PM
A sort of homecoming.

Are our quality newspapers deliberately misrepresenting what's happened, or are their headlines all written by genAI? The 'passed' claim is certainly misleading if not entirely false, but the second sentence is just misinformation.

One of the best live bands I've seen in years. Though the wisdom of the guitarist starting a circle pit with his lead still attached may, in hindsight, be questioned.
November 29, 2024 at 11:30 PM
On a completely different note, I think this may be the highest I've ever been in any fantasy league. It won't last, so let me bask for a moment in relative glory.

Speaking of Technicolour ... we watched this last week, which I gather is one of the last film on which that was used. P&P it assuredly is not (!) though it does involve ballet dancers ...

AI translation software has improved massively in recent years. But it's probably safe to say, not all of it equally. Here's Bing's attempt to translate a form from German...
