This was my experience with the movie as well. Even as a fan of DC and James Gunn, this just didn't work for me. The humor mostly fell flat for me so that might be a big reason why.

Taking his argument in good faith, I know some mid-level and senior engineers purely in it for the bag. Technically proficient but don't contribute in meetings and can barely be bothered to say good morning or volunteer for anything unless directly prompted. It drives me nuts.

It's definitely not a bad movie. I appreciate it a lot more later in life than I did when it first came out.
