Associate Professor of International Politics (interested in feminist peace), mum, knackered. Here to learn and avoid marking. She/her.
My son is on the best school trip today. A visit to a Chinese supermarket followed by an all you can eat Chinese buffet. Genuinely jealous.

Today my 13 and 11 year old children were subject to an hour long recruitment event by the British Army during their school assembly today. I'm using the fantastic resources at @forceswatch.bsky.social to draft my complaint.

remain surprised. the killing of human beings and the devaluation of human life (in killer and killed human) should remain a shock
the "and you're surprised by this?" guys have never been less vital than they are right now

I had to call security yesterday on the way out of uni. Poor security guard was stuck deciphering the ramblings of a tired perimenopausal women. ‘He was trying to break the metal things the cars drive though!’ ‘The…barriers?’ 'Then he got one of those plastic things you put in the road.’ ‘A … cone?’

Education is finding out what you love; learning how to use your leisure time; understanding what's possible. It's about living in a diverse society; knowing the world; visualizing the future; understanding others. Simply building a workforce can already be outsourced to AI. Being a teacher can't.

We are in despair after the Home Secretary’s announcement yesterday.
As an organisation helping couples and families survive the immigration system, we struggle to accept plans that make it easier to deport families and children.

This is echoing what many have been advocating for decades. Focusing on interventions around admissions is pointless if wider inequalities remain and efforts aren't made from the start of school to support pupils.

Poverty makes a huge difference here, but other barriers also remain firmly in place

A woman next to me at the GP surgery is very upset that there is a leaflet with a diagram showing how to do a vaginal swab. She brought one over to me, pointed at the diagram and said, 'There is too much of it around! Too much!'

Grateful for the 'defender' keyring being given out on campus this week by security. Excuse me whilst I go and find the 'try not to attack anyone' stall.

The cycle is:

Enrollments slightly decline so funding for teaching is cut so fewer courses are offered so enrollments slightly decline so funding for teaching is cut so fewer courses are offered so enrollments slightly decline so the legislature says terminate the program.
As usual, this is being done under the guise of “fiscal responsibility”, but imposing minimum numbers of degrees granted for a program to survive is shortsighted and may cost more long-term, as programs are closed at the whims of the legislature and universities can if respond if demand shifts again

My boyfriend is watching MobLand whilst I am helpfully telling him about Mothers, Monsters, Whores and how every woman in the show fits the narratives Sjoberg identified. He keeps rolling his eyes but I think he really appreciates it.

Dear NHS 7 day blood pressure diary, This morning as I read more meaningless AI policy, I wondered whether the soul of higher education was lost for ever and if, as I have dedicated my adult life to HE, my soul was also diminished… 158/90.

The markets are down. The markets have rallied. The markets are down. The markets have temporarily recovered. The markets are down. Has anyone checked whether the markets are also perimenopausal?

This evening at B&Q my boyfriend asked me what colour we should paint the skirting board and I said 'I just don't have the bandwidth to deal with this tonight'. We are both silently wondering who I've become.
