In training this week our boat personnel were learning how to swim and float while fully clothed. Yes, those are their pants as life vests.

The C-shift at the jail came together to surprise Sgt. Whitis with a jersey of his beloved Chicago Bears ahead of their playoff game on Sunday.

DGSO conducted joint in-service training Tuesday with Corrections and Operations personnel.

Highlights of the training included CPR/AED recertification, internal affair investigations overview, tactical bias and procedural justice and defensive tactics with shield work.

The seven-week academy will begin in April and continue into May.

Congratulations to Lt. Jill Smith who retired on Saturday as a corrections shift supervisor.

She served the Sheriff's Office and community for more than 24 years - hired in April 2001 and commissioned as a deputy in July 2002. She was promoted to lieutenant in January 2021.

Fire crews were able to contain a fire to garage Friday afternoon in southeastern Douglas County.

The fire was reported in the 100 block of E 2400 Road just before noon, and it was under control at 12:50 p.m. The Kansas State Fire Marshal is investigating the fire cause.

Deputies tailored the workshop to the needs and abilities of older adults.

DGSO continued our Christmas tree deliveries this week.

Deputy Wanda delivered a tree to Jessalyn and Mackenzie Zachariah, and Undersheriff Simmons, Capt. Kellerman and Lt. Robertson also dropped off five trees to our friends at the Ballard Center to distribute to families.
