How did I never know about Geosiphon?

The only member of Glomeromycota that is not mycorrhizal, instead it incorporates Nostoc N-fixing cyanobacteria into swollen hyphal bladders — inside its hyphae, the reverse of AM symbioses!

Geosiphon pyriformis anatomy. pcN: Nostoc cell wall, No: Nostoc filament, he: heterocyst, ms: simbiosome membrane, pm: plasma membrane, pcG: Geosiphon cell wall, nu: nucleus, mi: mitochondrion, in: cytoplasmatic inclusions, va: vacuole. Geosiphon has a specialised bladder used to harbour cyanobacteria, usually Nostoc punctiforme, although other Nostoc species are known to be incorporated by the fungus.
