My first ever essencia. It’s an amazing wine which you can only drink with a spoon. But tbh I expected a bit more of ‘I don’t know what’.

Interestingly, Vivino trashes it.

When you tasted La Tyre, anything else in Madiran is disappointing. But XL is a lovely wine.

That was surprisingly good, possibly even very good. A clean and interesting wine. And the price makes it very accessible @simonjwoolf.com

A bit too expensive to be mousy.

Lovely wine, perhaps even very good. But its alcohol (14.5) stands out wrecking the balance. Shame.

Tonight’s shared-cost dinner. Vega and Riberinho sang, bloody hell how they sang. Cheval tried to match them but couldn’t.

Incidentally, I am so sceptical about the ‘you drank it too early argument. Released wine should be eminently drinkable.

Wines of altitude. Catena and Musar sang, closely followed by Zorah and Sunal.

This is so good I can’t imagine it being better. Unbelievable quality of wine. Truly wonderful. I am very happy I got a chance to drink it.

2016. Such an elegant and beautiful wine. Perfection…but somehow without soul.

That’s the one I drank. It was wonderful (i am not very keen on sparkling wines and I loved that one). I think it’s bical,I may well be wrong though. They produce a limited number of bottles I was told.

This is very good, perhaps even excellent. But far from breathtaking. I al very happy not to have it again.

Haut Brion and sauerkraut salad are a pairing made in heaven!

Maria Pato, the most welcoming host ever. She’s holding a bottle with ‘my’ vintage. Amazing generosity. Thank you so much.

The end of visit with Luis Pato. We drank some anmazing bottles like a 30 year old ‘table wine’. Luis’ old baga is incredible.

Breathtaking. Thanks to Tim Atkin whom I heard talk about the wine.

I am disappointed. I had D&N before and it primed to expect something extraordinary. This wine isn’t.

Murrieta’s Capellania reserva. Not really my wine but it’s excellent. Goes well with a quiet, possibly even sultry Lower Silesian evening.

I love it. With every minute it offers more.

Domaine A 2009 from Tasmania. This is very good. I’m not certain I love it but it’s very very good.

Tonight's wines.

That was my birthday present this year. Wonderful wine. Which is about 5 times too expensive, 10 times overrated and on balance quite ordinary.

Delighted it’s finally arrived. It’s quite a tome! The toc offers a book whose author is aware of the context.

This is exquisite. Absolutely fantastic.

I’m just chuffed. JZ and my new book has arrived this morning in its hardcover materiality. Holding a product of a few years’ work never gets boring, it’s always exciting.

Please repost if you can.

That was quite a tasting.
