Teaching phonics in sound families scaffolds memory for many children. If any of your children are struggling in phonics, look at your chosen programme. Most are based on 2007 phases system. Power Phonics is not! We had to change our approach. Entirely. Do you?

Thank you NLT. I hear all of this from schools continually. There seems to be a huge disconnect between the focus on certain phonics programmes over the last few years and the reality of the day to day impact in classrooms.

Let’s not make phonics any more complex than it needs to be. Let’s not tie schools into endless subscriptions. Let’s not tie children into endless phonics. Let’s do it more effectively, more efficiently and engage children more! Rid yourself of 2007 old phases.

Ive delivered a lot of training on supporting and scaffolding the teaching of phonics this year. Schools keep reporting the same problems:
1. Their ‘chosen’ phonics programme (usually one of 2) requires endless, unsustainable intervention.
2. Said endless ‘catch up’ is turning children OFF.

The Phonics Screening Check - 10 days. Are you concerned? If so, rather than look at the children and their challenges- look at your programme. Has it served ALL CHILDREN WELL? If it hasn’t let’s not be in this position again next year.
