Totally, i doubt there is much proper scientific study into how all the elements of an IC die (the silicon, oxide and metal layers) might interact and age over 30 years. In a related note, there's also all the flash and eeprom based CPLDs from the 1990s, will they self-erase / bitrot over time?

gotcha, thanks for the link. I wasn't aware of that.

There's a rather notorious IC from the 1990s used in many broadcast systems that converted 27mbps parallel (rec.656 video) data into 270mbps serial (SDI video). They often go bad for unknown reasons.

do you think the real culprit could be bad BGA soldering, the heating / expansion could temporarily fix a bad connection. I can't think of many other reasons why heating would fix a die. But old complex dies can be a problem as they age or caused by manufacturing defects...

Lea I don't remember it being good, i always used headphones. But I didn't use it much for watching TV, more as a compact monitor for my video camera.

I have a couple of the later drives that don't even read, it makes me wonder if they might jut recapping... 🤔

So happy it helped you 😍 Does the drive read disks now? When i made that video i think i had at least two or three of the later 1/2 height drives so i didn't try and revive it, i just wrote it off and took it to bits.

Hey thanks for tagging me in! Quantel used a lot of MO drives in their old machines so i have seen quite a few and i have seen quite a few fail too unfortunately. It's good to know that the video was of some use. But you seem to have a drive there that has more issues than mine did!!

Totally and Quantel did it in the 1980s too with the DPB Paintbox, DVM Mirage and DCR Harry. Full broadcast animation. I would love to see you paint on a Quantel... maybe we can arrange it someday 😉

Of course i need to balance this with Quantel at the time which could do full broadcast video quality CG animation on the Harriet system but it cost £100k... 😱

Ok, it needs a 5.25" drive, but yea owning a DX2 was pretty special back then. Just at the point you needed a fan to cool your CPU. It felt owning one was special, amazing times...

Yea, hopefully it will travel, they have only been selling it for a couple of weeks in Manchester and Stockport but apparently it's been doing very well.
